Whether you be of any religion or none, may we wish all our customers & friends a very happy & peaceful Christmas and a healthy & prosperous New Year. Thank you for your support over the last 38 years (isn’t that scary!) and we look forward to seeing you again in 2016 🙂
As you will all know by now, Household Linens have been open on Oliver Plunkett St. for 25 years since the May weekend. That certainly makes some of us feel just that little bit old(er) but we’re still a long way from being the oldest business on the street… Of course, we are trading in one of the oldest surviving buildings which was originally a brass foundry in the early 1800’s. We share that history with other local buildings – did you know that the G.P.O. was the site of the original Cork Opera House ?
So much has obviously changed but the basic fabric of the street has stayed constant. The other constant is the unique nature of the ‘Merchants’ trading on Oliver Plunkett St. and surrounds… Over 250 businesses are currently plying their trade in and around this area and (nearly) all retain the Cork tradition of being indigenous, family owned and run. In a world that is becoming increasingly dominated by multi-national conglomerates, it is this feature that gives Cork (and Oliver Plunkett St. in particular) it’s unique ‘flavour’ and ‘character’. What’s all this leading in to..? Well, the retail trade has suffered more than most in recent years as people, hit by the effects of the recession, have cut back on spending. A group of people have come together, led by Clodagh Daly & Valerie Finnegan-Cahill (of John Daly Opticians & Ikon Hair Style) and they have launched a new initiative aimed at revitalising this historic quarter to make it the ‘must see’ / ‘go to’ destination for shoppers. Think, if you will, of other famous streetscapes such as Chinatown or Bourbon Street or the colour of Las Ramblas…
With the imminent arrival of “One Albert Quay” at the eastern end of Oliver Plunkett St. (the new office block scheduled to open in Feb. 2016 is expected to employ 1,600 people) and the “Brewery Quarter” in the old Beamish & Crawford site at the western end, Oliver Plunkett St. is ideally placed to be the main fulcrum for these projects and the potential spin-off can only be imagined. That’s the vision – it’s now down to the retailers themselves who, with the backing of the City Council, can make the “Plunkett Quarter” the envy of every other retailer in the country !
The Plunkett Quarter initiative can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Following the runaway success of our last giveaway competition we are delighted to announce another great prize, this time courtesy of our friends at the Fine Bedding Co. 🙂 For many years they have been the market leader in terms of product innovation and their duvets and pillows are designed with one purpose – to give you a great night’s sleep!Again, all you have to do is skip over to our Facebook page, SHARE & LIKE the competition and you may be our lucky winner.
The “Spundown” duvet uses the latest ‘Smartfil’ fibres and these are incredibly soft and light to give you exceptional warmth without weight. Choose from a 13.5 tog, a 10.5 tog or a 7.0 tog. What makes the “Spundown” duvet unique is that ALL SIZES up to super-king are washable at home in a domestic machine at a temperature of 60deg. This is the temperature required to kill dust-mites and many of those other nasty bugs that cause asthma & other related conditions.
This is what Jan had to say about her “Spundown” duvet… “Have just purchased my second Spundown duvet. Never had such comfort. Absolutely wonderfully luxurious.”

25 years ago, over the course of the May Bank Holiday Weekend, Household Linens packed up all their stock and moved to their present location at 118 Oliver Plunkett St. If anyone knows where those 25 years have gone – please let us know ! We plan to celebrate by giving away some great prizes with great offers across all our bedding ranges so do stay tuned in to our Facebook page and ‘Like’ to be kept informed. Having opened our doors in 1990 we want to be around for another 25 years with your help ! 🙂
Sadly, many of our neighbours haven’t lasted the course… 😦 We remember good neighbours & friends like “Young Ireland” schoolwear & “Regency Interiors”, “Acme Blinds” & “O’Connor Shoes”… Others have just had an identity crisis ! Our closest neighbours in “The Oliver Plunkett” bar were previously known as “Scotts of Caroline St.” and before that “The Black Bush” but it’s always a lively spot as is “The Ovens Bar” across the road, previously named “The Ovens Tavern”; that was back in the day when trams left the nearby yards for all points west.
All aboard for Household Linens 25th. Anniversary Sale !
We have some great memories of 1990… First of all, we had a heatwave that summer, the first really good summer in many many years. Then of course we had Italia 90 (and who can forget that penalty shoot-out!), Mary Robinson was elected President, another President – Melson Mandela visited Ireland, Cork won the double in hurling & football (c’mob the Rebels), the Irish One Pound Coin was introduced and “The Field” starring Richard Harris was released. We would love to hear of your stories and memories of that year so why not share them with us on our Facebook page and we might even give a prize for the best story !
FRANTIC FRIDAY This week’s offer is on baby blankets… Made from Organic cotton, they are free from all chemicals right through from the growing process to manufacture and only natural dyes are used. Previously on sale at €25.00 they are now reduced to only €10.00
The reason is, maybe, a little less exciting than that but, still, exciting in it’s own way. This week we launch a new campaign called “Frantic Friday” and it’s aim is to pick one product each week and offer you incredible value. To launch the promotion we have a huge reduction on the V & A design “Brocatelle”; available in Super-king size only (for all of you with ginormous beds) it is reduced from it’s original price of €190.00 to only €50.00 including 2 oxford pillowcases – but hurry, there is limited stock available. Unfortunately we can’t take orders for these outstanding items over the phone or by email so it really is a case of “first in – first served”!
It’s hard to believe that the film “Frantic” was released in 1988, all of 27 years ago (you can watch a clip of it here). Household Linens was just over ten years in business but we think ourselves and Harrison Ford have aged pretty well ! 🙂 Other stars of the silver screen who have graced our shop include the legendary Maureen O’Hara, famous snoop Jessica Fletcher a.k.a. Angela Lansbury and her friend, once dubbed the most beautiful man in Hollywood, actor Hurd Hatfield with whom she starred in “The Picture Of Dorian Gray”.
We hope we’ll see you following in their footsteps to 118 Oliver Plunkett St. real soon but until then – break a leg !!!
(no, please don’t… We can’t afford the insurance ! lol).
Spring brings changes in all different ways but this week has brought a sad change to Household Linens… We were very sorry to see Gemma leave us for a new position in U.C.C. but we wish her all the very best in her new post. Many of you will know Gemma from coming in to the shop where she had a great rapport with all our customers but she was also responsible for setting up and writing our blog; her informative articles and snippets of information always drew favourable comment and we hope to continue her good work in to the future.
We’re sure that we will have an influx of customers from U.C.C. looking for down pillows & Egyptian cotton sheets when Gemma spreads the good word about getting a good night’s sleep from Household Linens!
Our very best wishes Gemma !
and Happy Mothers Day to all the Mums out there. Wondering what to get your Mum this Mothers Day? We suggest:
Clarence from Dorma, the brand that all mothers know and love! Clarence is a classic floral design but easy on the eye, and subtle enough not to ever go out of fashion. Come check it out on our display bed in store now. If your Mum (or you) fancy a bit of luxury, Sheridan‘s 100% mulberry silk pillowcases are a good option also. The benefits of silk pillowcases for skin and hair have been widely touted in recent years. See this Huffington Post article on the topic. Like and share our own Facebook post about silk pillowcases to get 20% off one this week!
Speaking of social networking, have you signed up for our text service yet? You can do so any day in the shop by simply filling out your name and number at the till. You’ll receive text alerts about the latest HL news, as well as special offers on a regular basis.
If you do call in this week, take note of our display beds just inside the door. We’re going down the classic route with Sheridan’s Damask in light gold on the front double bed (always a favourite), we’re tapping into all things folk with Catherine, a cute patchwork number on the front single bed, and we’re feeling cool and modern with Boden on the second single bed, a silver-grey cover that is very much in fashion right now. Fifty shades indeed, in every colour, See you soon!
